Director Story

Gauri D. Chakraborty graduated from Asia’s premier institution, Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and has been a part of the Audio-Video Industry since 1995. She is a practicing filmmaker, academician and artist. She was associate producer on the award-winning film Sheep Thief (Asif Kapadia, 1997); anchor cum assistant producer at Zee Telefilms for Best of India (1998), and has worked with BBC WST on HIV awareness in India for Haath Se Haath Mila.  She has directed films for CWG 2010 volunteer training program. Gauri has been a media educator for the last 20 years including spearheading a media department and community radio station. Her doctoral thesis explores portrayal of the female ‘other half’ in cinema of the city in Bollywood. She has been a resource person for UGC refresher programs on gender and is a member of International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). Gauri was Festival Director for the IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival in 2019 and 2023.  An artist at heart, Gauri created Vansh Vyom, a series of performances which relooks at traditional arts from the point of view of matriarchal inheritance.  She has received the 100 Womenfaces award from the Centre for Women Entrepreneurs (COWE) in 2018. She is Editor of the book, Balancing the Wisdom Tree- An Anthology of FTII’s Women Alumni. Currently, she is serving as Professor, Times School of Media, Bennett University.
